My Experience Joining Google HackFest 2023: Developing a Waste Management App

Participating in Google HackFest 2023 was a transformative experience for me. It was an opportunity not only to showcase my technical skills but also to contribute to solving real-world problems using technology. Here's my journey and the project I worked on during the event.
Identifying the Problem

Living in a country where waste management is a significant issue, I wanted to address this problem through technology. Improper waste disposal not only leads to environmental pollution but also poses serious health hazards. I saw an opportunity to make a difference by creating a solution that not only educates people about waste management but also provides them with a practical tool to manage their waste effectively.
The Idea: Developing a Waste Management App

I decided to develop a waste management application that would empower users to properly dispose of their waste while also contributing to environmental sustainability. Here are some of the key features I envisioned for the app:
1. Educational ResourcesInformative articles, videos, and tips on waste management to educate users about the importance of proper waste disposal.
2. Waste TrackingUsers could track the amount and type of waste they generated daily, weekly, or monthly.
3. Garbage Collection ScheduleThe app provided users with information about garbage collection schedules in their area to ensure timely disposal.
4. Recycling InformationUsers could access information about recycling centers and learn how to properly recycle different types of waste.
5. Material RecoveryIntegration with material recovery facilities or power plants, allowing users to send their waste for recycling or energy conversion.
The Development Process

I started by brainstorming and outlining the features that the app would include. Once I had a clear vision, I began developing the app, focusing on creating a user-friendly interface and ensuring seamless functionality. Here's how I managed the project:
Project ManagementAs the project manager, I was responsible for organizing the worklist and assigning tasks to team members.
Timeline ManagementI developed a project timeline and ensured that we stayed on track to meet our deadlines.
Progress MonitoringI monitored the progress of the app development and addressed any challenges that arose along the way.
Teamwork and Collaboration

While I was primarily responsible for the waste management app, I was also part of a larger team working on different projects during the HackFest. Collaborating with other developers and sharing ideas was an enriching experience that allowed me to learn from my peers and expand my knowledge.
Learning and Growth

Although our team made it to the top 50, we unfortunately didn't make it to the next round to present at the Google office in Jakarta. Nevertheless, participating in the event was a valuable learning experience for me. I learned a lot about time management, teamwork, and creative problem-solving.
Conclusion

Participating in Google HackFest 2023 was an incredible journey that allowed me to apply my technical skills to address a pressing real-world problem. While our project didn't win, I am proud of the work my team and I accomplished during the event. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow as a developer, and I am excited to continue working on projects that make a positive impact on society.
